Henry Derrick Blocker, 83, of Edisto Island, SC died on Saturday, April 2, 2016, following a brief illness. Funeral services and burial will be private. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL.
Derrick was born and raised in Walterboro, SC son of the late Lucius and Nellie Rae (Price) Blocker. He graduated from Clemson College in 1954 with a Bachelor's degree in Entomology and served in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps for two years. Following his Army service, he returned to Clemson for his Masters degree where he met his wife, Martha.
After earning his Ph.D. in Entomology at North Carolina State University in 1965, Derrick joined the faculty in the Kansas State University College of Agriculture as a taxonomist in Manhattan, KS. His 30 year career at K-State included travels to India, Mexico, Paraguay, and Australia collecting new species of insects for research and preservation in the Entomology Department's Insect Museum.
Derrick retired to his beloved Edisto Island where he enjoyed every day surrounded by the natural world, as was his lifelong passion. He was an avid bird watcher, gardener, fisher and shrimper in Edisto's creeks, and was a devoted animal lover, with several adopted cats and two rescue dogs.
He leaves his wife of 58 years, Martha Brackett Blocker; his son, James Blocker (Shannon) of Osawatomie, KS; his daughter, Julia Egan of Waltham, MA; two grandchildren and many close friends.
Derrick will be loved and missed by his family and many friends. At Derrick's request, no services will be held.
