Helen Francis Willis Woodberry

Helen Frances Willis Woodberry, age 90, widow of Stratford Gillman Woodberry entered into eternal rest on July 13, 2011. Mrs. Woodberry was born in West Union, South Carolina, March 13, 1921, the daughter of Rev. Joseph Ernest Willis and Elizabeth Bella Langford Willis. Growing up in upstate South Carolina, she graduated from Parker High School, Anderson Junior College, and Coker College. She received a degree in library science from Emory University.  As an educator for 42 years she taught in Greenville County, Anderson County, Georgetown County (Andrews) and was Media Specialist in Edgefield County( Strom Thurmond High) and in Aiken County ( Ridge Spring-Monetta High. She was a member of Johnston United Methodist Church, in Johnston, SC, her former resident of 44 years. For the past six years she has lived in Mt Pleasant, South Carolina and attended Hibben United Methodist Church whenever she could. While living in Johnston she was an active member of the United Methodist Women, the Mizphah Sunday School Class, the church choir and often served on the church board. Mrs. Woodberry was active in the community as a member of Ridge Spring Garden Club, Peach Blossom Garden Club and the Lioness Club of Johnston. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Teacher Society. She was a faith filled woman who loved to help others, one person at a time. She is survived by her children, Jane W. Fordham, husband Stephen, of Mt. Pleasant. Joseph Woodberry, wife The Rev. Debra Griffis-Woodberry, of Greenville, Paula W. Davis of Columbia, four grandchildren, Katie Lauren Davis, Courtney Woodberry, Hampton Young, and Benjamin Fordham.  Also surviving a brother, Joe E. Willis, wife Bertie, of Simpsonville, a sister, Margie W. Clary, husband Ralph, of James Island, a sister-in-law, Mary Dean Willis of Laurens. She was preceded in death by a brother, Rev. Martin R. Willis. The family wishes to express thanks to the staff at Somerby, Sandpiper, and The Hospice of Charleston Center for the wonderful care of their mother. Many thanks to the three special ladies who assisted in caring for Mrs. Woodberry during her five years in Mt. Pleasant. A graveside service will be held in Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah, GA on Sunday, July 17, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. A Celebration of Mrs. Woodberry's life will be held at a later date at the Johnston United Methodist Church in her home town of Johnston, South Carolina.
