Helen Tyriw Pstrak, 92, of Mount Airy, MD, former longtime resident of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and widow of Capt. Theodore Wesley Pstrak, Sr., USN (Ret.), died Tuesday, July 17, 2018, in Mount Airy, MD. The Rite of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, July 24, 2018, at Christ Our King Catholic Church, 1122 Russell Dr., Mt. Pleasant at 11:00am. Entombment will follow at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Road, Mt. Pleasant. The family will receive friends Monday, July 23, 2018, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm with a Rosary beginning at 6:00pm at J. HENRY STUHR FUNERAL HOME, INC., MT. PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road.
Helen was born in Olyphant, PA, daughter of the late Porfyl Tyriw and the late Maria Dzuban Tyriw. She received her Bachelor of Art Education degree from Penn State University and was a former school teacher. She was a former parishioner at Christ Our King Catholic Church, where she and her husband worshiped since 1976. She was a talented artist, especially as a water colorist, and she also taught thousands of people the art of decorating Ukrainian Easter Eggs. She was very devout and active in her parish and with Rosary Cenacle prayer groups. She and her family moved 19 times during her husband's naval career. She was very outgoing and had a memorable beautiful smile.
She is survived by her brother William Tyriw of East Benton, PA; her daughter Mary Pstrak Runyan of Fort Worth, TX; her son Myron Anthony Pstrak and his husband Charles Robinson of Brevard, NC; her son Theodore Wesley Pstrak, Jr. and his wife Julie Pstrak of North Charleston, SC; her son Stephen Michael Pstrak and his wife Deborah of Gilbert, SC; and her son David Pstrak, Sr. and his wife Theresa of Mount Airy, MD. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, including Andrea Runyan of Albuquerque, NM; Daniel Runyan of New York, NY; Andy Pstrak and Tradd Pstrak of North Charleston, SC; Philip Pstrak of Greenwood, SC; Anna Pstrak of Columbia, SC; David Pstrak, Jr. of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and Kathryn Pstrak of Columbia, MD; and lastly, she will be missed by her companion dog, Marley. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents and her sister Kathryn Yacklon of Rochester, NY.
