Helen Robetta (Robbie) Wilson Burkett, beloved wife of Donald Howard Burkett of Charleston, died peacefully in her sleep on May 20, 2021 at the age of 88.
Robbie was born on March 23, 1933 in Cumberland, Maryland. She graduated from Frostburg State Teacher's College in 1954. Marriage, a brief teaching career, and three children soon followed. She spent the years after the birth of Steven, her first child, raising her family and providing a welcoming home and haven for her husband and children, other relatives, and many friends and neighbors. Robbie could do it all. She was a wonderful cook, seamstress, upholsterer, furniture refinisher, pianist, singer, hostess, and school and community volunteer. She also enjoyed bridge and reading, and was a whiz at Jeopardy. She did all of this while having to start from scratch many times as Don's career took the family to many different states.
After Don's retirement and their move to Charleston, Robbie indulged her love for history, becoming a docent for the Historical Charleston Foundation and a licensed tour guide. She was also the family historian, ever present with her video camera to record, well, just about anything.
Robbie always had a joke to share and was known for her quick wit. Her sense of humor most likely was integral to enjoying a happy marriage of 67 years. She will be sorely missed.
Robbie is survived by her husband, Don, children Steve (Jackie) Burkett, Jennifer (Bill) Edwards and Caroline Apple, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be private.
