Helen was born September 19, 1939 in Charleston, South Carolina, daughter of the late John Frederick Tapio and the late Bertha Caroline Leppert Tapio. While growing up on Sullivan's Island, she fostered a love of animals, especially cats and dogs. She later worked as a secretary in the family business, and volunteered in a number of ministries in her church, where she was a member of the ladies WELCA group. Music was a large part of her life and she was known for her sweet voice, as heard throughout the community with a barbershop chorus named the Sweet Adelines. She was also known for her beautiful handwriting. Known as "Aunt Googie" to many, Helen will be remembered for being steadfast in her faith and for the way she loved her family.
