Hay Fant Sparks, Jr., 79, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away at home on June 28, 2018.
Hay Fant was born on August 29, 1938 in Union, South Carolina to the late Hay Fant Sparks, Sr. and Josephine Hall Sparks.
He graduated from Union High School in 1956 and the University of South Carolina in 1960 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He worked for Milliken for 43 years and retired in 2000. While working at Milliken he developed several patents and in 1999 received the Milliken Award of Excellence for Outstanding Contribution to the 1999 Pursuit of Excellence Process.
The Hay Fant Sparks, Jr. playground was dedicated on February 15, 2014 at the University of South Carolina's Founders Park Stadium. The Streetman family named the playground in honor of him, a lifelong Gamecock fan. He loved the outdoors and was an avid duck hunter and was also a lifetime blood donor.
Hay was a member of Grace Church Cathedral and Mt. Pleasant Senior Center.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Clyburn Sparks of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his children, Hay Fant Sparks, III of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Stewart Douglas Sparks of Summerville, SC and Mary Catherine Sparks Streetman (Jimmy) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his beloved grandchildren, George Murphy Streetman, Andrew Hay Streetman and Mary Victoria Streetman, all of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his brother, Frank Bruce Sparks, Sr. (Kay) of Union, SC. He was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn A. Sparks, Sr.
His funeral service will be held at Grace Church Cathedral, 98 Wentworth Street, Charleston, SC 29401 on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at 11:00 am. Burial will be in Union, South Carolina at 11:00 am on Friday, July 6, 2018 at Rosemont Cemetery, 123 Sardis Road, Union, SC 29379.
