Harry George Speliopoulos Spell

June 24, 1931 — February 11, 2021

Harry George Speliopoulos Spell of Charleston, SC, husband of Lucy Stupenos Spell, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2021, at his home surrounded by his family. A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Harry was the heart of his family and will always be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor, and humility.

Harry was born on June 24, 1931 at Baker Sanatorium in Charleston. He was son of the late Eleni Gianaris Speliopoulos and George John Speliopoulos who immigrated to the United States from Kalavrita, Greece in the early twentieth century. Harry grew up on Rutledge Avenue and graduated from Charleston High in 1950. He attended the University of South Carolina, graduating in 1954 with a degree in Business Administration.

A true entrepreneur, Harry opened the Western Auto franchise on James Island in 1962. He later founded a self-storage business on Maybank Highway. Harry was a lifelong member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity in Charleston, where he served on the Parish Council and as a volunteer for many years. He served as President of the Plato Chapter No. 4 of Order of AHEPA (American Hellenic Education Progressive Association) and was instrumental in establishing the chapter's college scholarship funds.

In his retirement, Harry became an avid cyclist. He and Lucy took numerous bike trips together, and most notably he celebrated his 70th birthday with a cross-country ride. When he was not traveling, he enjoyed spending time with his six grandchildren, who will forever remember their many adventures with their Papou.

Harry is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lucy; his daughter, Georgia Spell Kliossis of Charleston; his son, Harry Spell, Jr. (Dena) of Atlanta, GA; son-in-law, Nick Demos of Atlanta, GA; his grandchildren: Lukia Kliossis, Nicholas Kliossis (Martha), Johnny Demos, Elana Spell, Eleni Demos, and Alexis Spell. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Maria Spell Demos and his brother, John George Speliopoulos.

The family would like to thank Harry's caregivers and Roper Hospice for their compassionate care.
