Harry Alexander Newman, Jr. of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. husband of Elizabeth (Betty) Tuttle Newman, died peacefully July 28th, 2015. The celebration of his life will be held in Point Hope United Methodist Church Saturday, August 1st, at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Walter J. Cantwell presiding. A reception will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall. The committal service will be in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens at 3 p.m.
Harry was born on September 3rd, 1928 in Jacksonville, Florida, the son of Susie and Harry Newman, Sr. He was a graduate of the University of Florida with degrees in Business Administration and Health Sciences. Later in life, he received another degree from Duke University Medical School as a Physician's Assistant.
He worked for Prudential Insurance Company until 1967, at which time he felt called to the mission field. He and his first wife, Barbara, as well as their 5 sons spent 8 years in mission with the people of Bolivia. His first four years were spent serving as the administrator of the Methodist Hospital in Obrajes, a suburb of La Paz, Bolivia. After completing the P.A. program at Duke University, he returned with his family to offer medical services to the people in and around Caranavi, Bolivia.
In 1976, the family moved to Lawndale, N.C. where Harry worked with Dr. Richard Maybin in family practice. After 10 years in Lawndale, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia to work as a field representative of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries for the Southeastern Jurisdiction. His first wife, Barbara Buck Newman, died in 1985. In 1989, he married Elizabeth Tuttle (Betty) and moved to Asheville, N.C. In Asheville, Harry served on the staff of Central UMC as minister of mission and evangelism.
During their 26 years of marriage, Harry and Betty traveled extensively, visiting 75 different countries. For 9 summers they went to China with the English Language Institute of China (ELIC) to teach English. Their trips included building teams to Panama, Chile, Kenya, Uganda, India, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic.
Harry served in the U.S. Navy as a bombardier and Radar technician for 6 years, both during WW II and the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Elizabeth (Betty); four sons, Bruce (Nina) of Jacksonville, FL., Harry (Shari) of Prospect, KY, Don (Brenda) of Charlotte, NC and Gary (Becky) of Tampa FL; daughter-in-law, Kimiko Newman of Mount Pleasant, SC; four step-daughters, Beth (Daryl) Carter of Statesville, NC, Tempe (Stephen) Moore of Summerfield, NC, Jane MacKinnon of Houston, TX and Laura (Shannon) Harmon of Statesville, NC; 17 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his first wife, Barbara, and his son CAPT (Ret.) Robert Scott Newman.
