Harry Latané Johnston, 76, died peacefully at his home on July 16, 2023, in Mount Pleasant, SC. Mary Berry Holmes Johnston, the love of his life and wife of 21 years, preceded him in death after passing away unexpectedly in April 2022.
Born on January 31, 1947, in Summerville, SC, Harry was the son of the late Dr. Aquilla Richard and Catherine Deitrick Johnston of St. George, SC.
Harry is survived by his three children, Richard Johnston (Nicole) of Colorado Springs, CO, Julie Sosa (Geovany) of New York, NY, and Harriet Johnston (Brian) of Greenville, and his three stepchildren, Claire Eckert (Chris) of Columbia, Nan McGregor (Eric) of Avon Park, FL, and Lauren Rivers of Mt Pleasant. Harry adored his ten grandchildren: William and Izzy Johnson; Johnathan, Frances, Michael, and Samuel Eckert; Legare, Liam, and Holmes McGregor; and Stiles Rivers, who lovingly knew as 'Scratch'. He had three brothers, Johnny, Kirk, and the late Richard (Dickie) Johnston, and was very close to them and their families.
Harry graduated from Wofford College in 1968, was a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and earned an MBA from the University of South Carolina in 1973. He spent most of his career as a CPA in Spartanburg and Greenville. In 1992, he founded an independent accounting and financial advisory firm where he loved his work and the wonderful colleagues and clients that loved working with him.
He was a member of Saint Andrews Church. He was a quiet but profoundly devoted supporter of the church’s mission, Drawing Near to God Ministries, and his small group Bible study.
Harry was, quite simply, a good man. He never stopped trying to be a better husband, father, friend, and Christian. He was an avid reader of the Bible and literary classics, an aviation enthusiast, a fly-fishing fanatic, and a curious traveler who cherished the destinations he and his wife explored together.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, July 20, at Saint Andrews Church in Mount Pleasant. The family will receive friends afterward at Sam’s Hall, St Andrews Church in Mount Pleasant. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mt. Pleasant Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to one of Harry’s favorite charities:
Fellowship of Christian Athletes (Charles E. Holmes Endowment Fund) https://my.fca.org/holmesendowmentfund; Priority One Ministry (Bud Carpenter)https://www.carpenterbud.com/; North Charleston Dental Outreach (Bill Sasser) https://www.northcharlestondentaloutreach.com/; Drawing Near to God Ministries (Joanne Ellison) https://drawingneartogod.com/.
May Harry's memory bring comfort, curiosity, and faith to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
