Harry J. Barnett

Harry J. Barnett, 96, physician and surgeon, of North Charleston, SC husband of Delphine T. Barnett, died Wednesday, October 26, 2011, in a local hospital.

Born June 11, 1915 in Milwaukee, WI, he was the son of Alfred Dave Barnett and Rose Blumfeld Barnett. His Bar Mitzvah was celebrated in 1928. He was a graduate of Second Avenue Grammar School and in 1932 of South Division High School. He earned his bachelor's of science degree in 1936 from Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI.

He was a graduate of and completed his residency at Chicago Medical School, Chicago, IL and served an internship at North Chicago Community Hospital. In 1942 he began work at Natchez Charity Hospital but with the outbreak of World War II he joined the US Army Medical Corps as a Major. He was a decorated war veteran having earned the Bronze Star Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with two bronze stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star and the Combat Medic Badge. In 1946 he met and married Delphine Tillman; They honeymooned in Havana, Cuba. Dr. Barnett set up a private practice in the Fall of that same year in Ashkum, Illinois.

At the time of his retirement in 1991 while he was on the staff at Iroquois, St. Mary's and Riverside Hospitals in Illinois, Dr. Barnett was also providing medical services to three nursing homes. He was the president of the Iroquois County Medical Society, and a Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice (AAFP). He and his wife moved to the Elms in North Charleston, SC and joined KKBE.

Dr. Barnett is survived by his wife of 65 years, Delphine Barnett of North Charleston, SC; two sons, Bruce Alan Barnett, MD and his wife Diane of Toledo, OH and Phillip Barnett and his wife Adrianne of Murfreesboro, TN; and one grandchild, Sara Barnett, MD.

The funeral service will be held graveside at Beth Elohim Cemetery, Sunday, October 30, 2011 at 3:00 pm followed by military honors. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to KKBE, 90 Hassell Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
