Entered into eternal rest on the afternoon of March 10, 2012, Dr. Harry Isaac Appel, husband of Judith Funk Appel. Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends of Dr. and Mrs. Harry I. Appel are invited to attend the graveside services of the former in Brith Sholom Beth Israel Cemetery (Maryville) Monday, March 12, 2012 at 11:00 a.m.
Dr. Appel was born October 1, 1924 in Charleston, SC, the son of Abraham Appel and Ida Goldberg Appel. He was a retired Doctor of Optometry, a member of Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue and a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry and was a member of the Hebrew Benevolence Society, Charleston Elks Lodge #242, Jewish Community Center, Jewish War Veterans, South Carolina Optometric Association and was active in the Dock Street Theatre. Dr. Appel was a member of the 1924 Birthday Club and past president of the North Charleston Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his wife of Charleston; two sons, Dr. Martin S. Appel and Dr. Gary S. Appel, both of Charleston; one daughter, Gayle A. Kaplan and her husband, Yale, of North Potomac, MD; six grandchildren, Ross Appel (Alexis Ratowsky), Michael Appel, Rachel Appel, Ari Kaplan, Rebecca Kaplan (Shawn Eskow) and Liza Kaplan; two brothers, Samuel Appel and his wife, Judy, and Dr. Sidney D. Appel and his wife, Marla, all of Atlanta, GA; one sister, Faye A. Rones of Charleston; and many nieces and nephews.
His passion for softball was only surpassed by his family and religion. He was instrumental in organizing the softball league that the Jewish Community Center named in his honor.
