Harold I. Sherman

Harold Irving "Buzz" Sherman, 87, widower of the late Minnie Nussbaum Sherman, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, October 8, 2013, at the Charleston Hospice House in Mount Pleasant, SC.His graveside service will be held Thursday, October 10, 2013, in Emanu-El Cemetery , Sycamore Avenue, Maryville at 2:00 p.m. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 232 CALHOUN STREET.

Harold was born August 30, 1926, in Worcester, MA, to polish immigrants, a son of the late Reverend David Sherman, a synagogue cantor and Fannie Herman Sherman. Harold, affectionately known as Buzz to family and friends, remained in Worcester until his early 20's when he enlisted in the United States Army. The daring rescue of a fellow soldier earned Buzz an honorable discharge from the Army, enabling him a chance to further his education at Clarke University in his hometown of Worcester. After graduating college, Buzz moved to Charleston, SC where his father had been hired as a cantor at the new Emanu-El Synagogue. Within a few years, he met and married Minnie Ruth Nussbaum, from Erhardt, SC. They were married 37 years before Minnie's untimely death in 1987. Buzz was a renowned Real Estate Developer and Financier in the Charleston area. He established a successful family owned business, The Sherman Agency, specializing in real estate, insurance, construction and warehouse management. In 1984 he was awarded the South Carolina Governors' Award for volunteerism. Buzz was well known in the area for his public service and philanthropy, most notable in 1998 when he, along with Edward and Sallie Pritchard made a significant donation to the M.U.S.C. Children's hospital in the downtown area. A large monetary gift and a donation of a prime piece of land were instrumental in the success of the M.U.S.C. Children's Hospital we know today. He also was instrumental in building The Sherman House, a low-income independent living senior facility in West Ashley, which was named in his honor. He will forever be known for his generosity, kindness and sense of humor. He loved life and family, was a world traveler and enjoyed being the life of the party. Buzz also loved to play tennis and cards. He was a past president of the Charleston Jewish Federation, Jewish Community Center and the Charleston Welfare fund. Buzz was a former board member for eight years for the South Carolina State Finance and Housing Authority. He was Doctor of Humane Letters, M.U.S.C. and a life member of the Elks Club.

He is survived by his children Ivan M. Sherman (Mark Ledet)of New Orleans, LA, Howard B. (Leighanne) Sherman of Charleston, SC, and Mitchell L. (Joann) Sherman of Mount Pleasant, SC; and his three grandchildren, Stacey Sherman, Molly Sherman and David Sherman.
