Harold "Hal" Burke Russell, Jr., 63, husband of Anne Hilton Russell of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, entered into Eternal Life on Sunday, October 21, 2012, at home surrounded by his loving family. He fought a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease before God took him Home. The relatives and friends of Hal Russell, Jr. are invited to attend his Funeral Service on Friday, October 26, 2012 in the East Cooper Baptist Church, 361 Egypt Road at 11:00 am. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October, 25, 2012 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
Hal was born on March 10, 1949, son of the late Harold Burke Russell Sr. and the late Ella Jones Russell. He spent his childhood in South Portland, Maine before moving to Charleston in 1963. He graduated from St. Andrews High School in 1967, where, according to classmates and faculty, he majored in "sports." He graduated from Charleston Southern University (Baptist College) in 1971. Hal was the owner and operator of Charles Towne Mortgage Corporation, Charles Towne Credit Corporation, and Anburke, Inc. Construction before retiring.
He was a member of several service and business organizations including serving as a long term board member and Past President and Director of the Charleston Trident Home Builders Association. He was also involved in the Charleston Metro Exchange Club, the Mt. Pleasant Sertoma Club, Palmetto Touchdown Club (Past President, Director, and founder of the Scholarship Foundation), Charleston Speech and Hearing Center (Past President and Director), Charleston Southern University (Past President and Director of the Board of Visitors, Member of the Board of Trustees, and Scholarship donor), and Star Gospel Mission (Past Director).
He was a former member of Hibben United Methodist Church where he served as Chairman and member of the Finance Committee, and taught junior high Sunday School. He was a present member of East Cooper Baptist Church where he participated in men's Bible Studies, Sunday School, and founded the "golf ministry."
Hal was a boys soccer coach in Mt. Pleasant for many years and an assistant boys soccer coach at Bishop England High School for twelve years. He was an avid golfer his whole life and often seen at Snee Farm Country Club and Charleston Municipal Golf Course.
Hal was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Anne H. Russell of Mount Pleasant, SC; son, Kyle Burke Russell and his wife, Walker, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; daughter, Shay Russell Simpson and her husband, Robert, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Grandchildren, Taylor Anne Russell, Kyle Burke Russell Jr., Mary Walker Russell, and Harbor Anne Simpson all of Mt. Pleasant, SC; sister, Bettye Sue Staples and her husband, Jon, of Winthrop, ME; and many special nieces and nephews.
He has been a particpant in the MUSC Alzheimer's Research Program for many years and will be a brain donor to the Carroll Campbell Brain Tissue Donation Program at MUSC.
