Halette Thiers

Halette Thiers of Charleston, SC, died September 22, 2022, a month short of her 72nd birthday. After conquering a series of 3 primary cancers and other serious maladies throughout her life, she ultimately succumbed to a short but catastrophic acute illness.

 
Halette grew up a few blocks from Madison Square Garden in New York City and was always considered a bit different from her peers. As she often reminded her future husband, Bruce, “When you were listening to the Beatles, I was listening to Bach.” Halette and Bruce met at the Skin and Cancer Clinic of New York University Medical Center, where Halette was working and Bruce was doing a visiting elective rotation while a dermatology resident in Buffalo. They lived their entire married lives in Charleston where Bruce was part of a group chosen to found a new Department of Dermatology at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).

Halette was the kindest, sweetest person to walk the earth. A little girl with a very big heart. She personified the verse, “the love you take is equal to the love you make.” She was the best friend anyone could have. Her passion was simply to help those in need, and she was always more generous to others than she was to herself. In addition to classical music and art, she loved pets and travel, and she and Bruce had the opportunity to see the world, from London to Istanbul, from Sydney to Beijing. She will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.

Halette is survived by her husband, Bruce, and her loyal four-legged friend, Nicholas, who will miss sharing desserts with her. 
Donations in her name can be made to the Charleston Animal Society, Palmetto Animal Assisted Life Services (PAALS) in Columbia, or the Hollings Cancer Center of MUSC.

Her funeral service will be held graveside Sunday, September 25, 2022 in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Road at 10:00 a.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
