H. Evans Townsend

Entered into eternal rest on the morning of April 5, 2011, Henry Evans Townsend, Jr., widower of Ruth Ledbetter Townsend.  Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral services at the graveside in Magnolia Cemetery Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 11:00 am. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, Wednesday between 5:00 and 7:00 pm.


Evans was born October 27, 1914 in Rockville, SC, the son of Henry E. Townsend, Sr. and Nancy Elizabeth McDow. He attended the College of Charleston and was a member of First (Scots) Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon, Treasurer of Sunday School and Treasurer of the fund raising committee to build a new Sunday School Building.  He served on the Board of Directors of the Carolina Art Association and was a Charter Member of the Azalea Festival Committee.  He received a Silver Medal Award from the Advertising Federation of Charleston in 1999. Evans was a member for 55 years and served on the board of the Charleston Lions Club. He was a member of the Sea Island Yacht Club, The Charleston Museum, Friends of the Charleston County Library, the Low Country Open Land Trust and The St. Cecelia Society. He served on the first Charleston County Council for six years and was past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Evans was a salesperson for Mac Outdoor Advertising Company. One of his fondest memories was participating with Deligall Jenkins in the 88-88 Oldsmobile commercials.


He is survived by two sons: Henry Evans Townsend, III (Frances) of Summerville, SC and William D. Townsend of Charleston, SC; two daughters: Elizabeth T. Adams (Richard) and Ellen T. Leighton both of Charleston, SC; five grandchildren: Henry, Alicia, Paul, John and Katherine; two great grandchildren: Julia and Allison. He was predeceased by his brother John C. Townsend.
