Herman Lloyd Michael (Mike), 93, of Charleston passed away at home on 04/24/18, surrounded by loved ones singing praises to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His funeral service will be held Saturday, April 28, 2018 in Ashley River Baptist Church, 1101 Savannah Highway at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends in the Church from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. Born March 2, 1925 to James Russell Michael and Annie Lena Waynick Michael in Greensboro, NC, he grew up in Bradenton, FL. Mike enjoyed a brief career as a radio announcer, and was managing stores for Eagle Tire when he met his beloved wife of 67 years, Frances Gallaway, in Laurens, SC. Three months after they were married, he was called up for active duty by the Marine Corp. Following the Korean War, he joined The Equitable Life Assurance Society and moved his family to Charleston in 1954. As manager for the eastern third of South Carolina, he won numerous awards for sales and leadership.
He retired in 1997 after 43 years with The Equitable. A long-time member of Ashley River Baptist Church, he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and senior adult choir member. In 1974-75, he served as President of the St. Andrews Rotary Club. Mike was well-traveled and an amazing story teller who loved singing, growing roses, playing his harmonica, and gardening. He was an avid Cardinals Baseball, Redskins Football, and USC Sports Fan.
In addition to his wife, Fran, he is survived by: sons Del (Marian), Don (Nancy); grandchildren: Holly Murrah (Erik), Rhett Michael, Sarah Rosal (Phillip); great-grandchildren: Claire and Tyler Murrah; beloved nieces and nephews: Carolyn Musselman(Don), Julie Byrd (Bill), John Michael (Helen), Ann Moore (Hugh), Woody Smith (JoAnn), Marc Smith (Lorraine); extended family members Mark, Liz, and Atticus Senior; and loving caregivers: Betty, Shirley and Bertha.
