Gwendolyn Hemphill Bennett Miller, 85, of Hanahan, SC, died Tuesday, February 7, 2017. Her funeral service will be held Sunday, February 12, 2017, in Highland Park Baptist Church, 6211 Murray Drive, Hanahan, SC, at 2:00 pm. Interment will be held at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Saturday, February 11, 2017, in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Northwoods Chapel, 2180 Greenridge Road, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Gwendolyn was born December 27, 1931, in Savannah, GA, daughter of the late Robert W. Hunter and the late Evelyn Moore Hunter. She grew up in North Charleston, SC, and graduated high school from Chicora in 1949. She attended the College of Charleston where she was a member of PHI MU National Women's Sorority. She was married to William Gordon Hemphill October 10, 1953. They had two sons, the late Robert Gordon and Jeffery Eugene. Mr. Hemphill passed away on March 29, 1996. Then she married James F. Bennett on February 15, 1997. He passed away April 17, 2007. She then married Leroy T. Miller on April 15, 2012, and he passed away June 14, 2015. On June 6th, 1951, she started working at Westvaco in a control lab. She retired 42 and one half years later as Senior Analyst. She was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church. She served on the Hanahan School Board and was the only woman to serve as chairperson. She was appointed to the Berkeley County Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse. She was elected to the board of directors of CPM Federal Credit Union where she served as a chairperson of the board for 39 years. She also served on the supervisory committee for two years.
She is survived by her son, Jeffery Eugene Hemphill, his wife Trina, and their daughter Victoria; stepson, James F. Bennett, Jr., his wife Linda, and their daughters Emily C. Bennett and Tracy L. Bennett; two step-sons, Larry Thomas Miller and Robert Eugene Miller.
