Günter Manfred Karsch, 88, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Saturday, March 1, 2025. His Funeral Service will be held Thursday, March 6, 2025 in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 3:00 pm. Interment will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens.
Günter was born June 28, 1936 in Frankfurt an der Oder, Germany, son of the late Max Karsch and Else Kralack. Max and Else raised their four boys Wilfried, Hans, Günter, and Wolfgang in an apartment right above their family business “Bäckerei Karsch", a popular neighborhood bakery. After the turmoil of World War II, Günter spent his time helping in the bakery, raising his many pets (chickens, cats and his dog Senta), and excelled as a member of the Frankfurt waterpolo, handball, and swim teams. To his schoolteachers, he was known as one of the Karsch brothers which equaled strong willed, naughty, and brilliant at the same time. After graduation, he went on to become a teacher before moving to Hamburg where he obtained a PhD in physics from the University of Hamburg. Professor Karsch taught mathematics and physics at the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg throughout his career. His students enjoyed his charismatic personality and ability to package numbers and formulas into interesting and actually understandable lectures. His biggest joy in life though was his family. Together with his former wife Birgit, he raised three children Vanessa, Mirko, and Fabian. He spent every free moment involved in their lives, teaching them how to swim and ride their bikes, coaching the handball team, and taking them to the zoo every Wednesday while they were young. After his retirement, he was able to enjoy time with his 9 grandchildren in Munich, Berlin, and Mount Pleasant. Grandpa “Gabi” moved to the US permanently in 2023 to live with his daughter and her family in Mount Pleasant. He divided his time here between high school soccer games, strolls through the I’ON neighborhood and soaking up some sun in the backyard.
He is survived by his daughter, Vanessa Karsch Hinson, her husband Hans, and their four children Jonah, Noah, Elijah, and Micah of Mount Pleasant, SC; his son Fabian Karsch, his wife Myriam, and their daughters Emilia and Luise of Munich, Germany; his son Mirko Karsch, his wife Covadonga Lopez Iglesias, and their children Robin, Malene, and Gabriel of Berlin, Germany. He was preceded in death by his brothers Wilfried, Hans, and Wolfgang Karsch, and his parents Max and Else Karsch.
