She was born on November 19,1936 in Lake City, SC, daughter of the late Charles Manning Elders, Sr and Hattie Mae Mack Elders. Grace was known to many as "Grandmama," a fitting title for someone who loved all those around her. She always said she had three families, her family, her church family, and her family at Landmark Construction. She was a member of Miles Road Baptist Church for many years. She touched lives through her work in children's church making the Bible come alive through creative storytelling with flannel graph. Grace instilled in the young hearts the importance of loving the Lord and serving others. It was important to her to teach the kids how to serve in the church as they grew older. One of Grace's most impactful contributions was founding the widows ministry at Miles Road. This initiative provided solace and support to numerous women navigating the profound loss of their spouses. Her compassionate nature and listening ear brought comfort to those in need. She would always say "I love my ladies." Family was at the core of Grace's being, and she cherished every moment spent with her children and grandchildren. Her culinary skills were unmatched, as she delighted all three of her families with delicious homemade meals and baked goods. She was in charge for many years of all the church fellowships. Her fruitcakes during Christmas became a tradition that many looked forward to each year. Even as Grace's journey on earth came to a close, her faith remained unwavering. She was humbled at the end, wanting no glory for herself but to glorify the Lord in everything she said. Her boldness for wanting other to know Jesus grew so strong in her last few weeks. She sought to ensure that everyone she encountered felt the love of Jesus and carried with her the hope of being reunited in eternity. Her life truly exemplified the words from Matthew 28:19-20, serving as a living testimony to her unwavering faith. Grace Matthews will be deeply missed by her surviving family members and friends, who will forever hold dear the memories of her kindness, love, and devotion to the Lord. May her legacy of service and faith continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
