Gladys was born February 25, 1922 in Great Falls, SC, the first born of the late Luther Knight, Sr.and Lina Whitley Knight. Gladys was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Columbia chapter 59. She worked many years as a buyer for Berry's on Main in Columbia and Ivey's of Orlando and Klines of Kansas City. Before retiring she was a door greeter for Walmart in Summerville, SC, where she was known for her welcoming smile. She looked forward to Sundays to attend Summerville Baptist Church. Having been brought up in the many churches her father pastored, she could sing from memory countless hymns and gave comfort to her family and patients at the Brian Center. A favorite gathering was with brother Lou and "sister" Barbara for a hymn fest. She was a treasure to her daughters and grandchildren and extended family.
Surviving her are daughters: Lina Honeycutt (Rob) of Columbia and Sandra J. Porter (Jesse) of Summerville; four grandchildren: Jeffrey C. Honeycutt (Lisa) of Columbia, Jane H. Spencer (Richie) of North Myrtle Beach, Andrea Porter of Summerville and Jennifer Porter of North Charleston; four great-grandchildren: Andrew Buss, Chandler and Sophia Porter and Autry Boris; along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew T. Chandler; sisters, Doris Knight and Sarah Knight; and a brother, Luther Knight, Jr. We treasure our memories of Gladys and await a grand reunion with our Lord. Special thanks to the Brian Center and Lutheran Hospice for all the TLC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Summerville Baptist Church, 417 Central Ave., Summerville, SC 29483.
