Gladys Mitchum Cade, 95, the daughter of William L. Mitchum and Theresa Driggers Mitchum and widow of Farrell O. Cade, died Thursday, January 24, 2013 at her home in Charleston, South Carolina surrounded by her family. She was born October 30, 1917 in Charleston, South Carolina. Her funeral services will be held Sunday, January 27, 2013 in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church at 2:00 p.m. Interment, Old St. Andrew's Parish Episcopal Churchyard. The family will receive friends Saturday between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
Mrs. Cade graduated from North Charleston High School. As a teenager she went to work for Edwards Stores, which was the beginning of a 50 year career in which she rose from counter girl to a company buyer. Her distinction was that she was the only woman buyer among a large number of men. She traveled the world, from the United States to Europe and the Orient, purchasing housewares for the Edwards Stores.
She is survived by her brothers: Thaddeus L. Mitchum and his wife Sylvia, Hugh Tupper Mitchum; sisters: Annie Mitchum Williams, Ivey Mitchum Turley, Inez Mitchum Locke, Silvine Mitchum Patierno and Faye Mitchum Bolin and her husband Kenneth all of Charleston, SC and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Bernett William Mitchum.
