Gertrude Sosnik Solomon

May 4, 1919 — June 10, 2019

Gertrude Sosnik Solomon, 100, died Monday, June 10, 2019. Her funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 12, 2019 in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Brith Sholom Beth Israel Cemetery (Maryville).

Gertrude Sosnik Solomon was predeceased by her adoring and adored husband Aaron, her brother Robert Sosnik, and her parents Charles and Pearl Sosnik.

Gertrude graduated high school after 11th grade, receiving a medal for the highest grade point average. That award usually included a college scholarship, but did not in that Depression year. Instead of attending college, Gertrude worked in a Winston-Salem CPA firm, becoming the first woman to work there. She shared her earnings with her family.
Gertrude loved children. She taught Sunday school, led a Brownie troop, performed eye exams for school children, participated in the formative years of Head Start, and volunteered with young patients at the Medical University.

Gertrude was a member of National Council of Jewish Women, Hadassah, ORT, and served as president of BSBI Sisterhood, receiving a standing ovation when she gave her closing report in rhyme. She chaired the Women's Division of the Charleston Jewish Welfare Fund, increasing the previous year's giving by 25%. Gertrude was a Red Cross volunteer, worked with Hospice, the American Heart Association, and March of Dimes, where she instituted the block-by-block solicitation. She also worked for eight years in the medical office of her son-in-law, Dr. Howard Brilliant.
Gertrude was a superior baker and gracious hostess, celebrating Jewish holidays and special events with warmth and elegance. Her home was always open to meetings, events, guests, and games. A savvy shopper, she had a good eye for antique china and crystal.

Gertrude is survived by her children Marsha Londe (Simon), Marilyn Brilliant (Howard), and Sam Solomon (Lisa Koonin); grandchildren Michael Londe (Susan), Paula Dzik (Michael), Morton Brilliant (Jordana Rubel), Jonathan Brilliant (Brooke), Jay Solomon (Eszter Boda), Mark Solomon, Sarah Cork, and great-grandchildren Marin Londe, Samantha Londe, Asher Brilliant, Mabel Brilliant, Ari Brilliant, and Coby Brilliant.

Although she never realized her dream of appearing on a Today Show Smucker's jar, she lived to 100, and her birthday was celebrated by children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren.

Donations in her memory may be made to Weinstein Hospice, 3150 Howell Mill Road NW, Atlanta, GA 30327 or to the charity of your choice.
