Gertrude Seabrook Hay, 86, of Johns Island, South Carolina, the widow of William Clement Hay, Sr., died Tuesday, July 9, 2013. Her Funeral Service will be held Friday, July 12, 2013 in the Johns Island Presbyterian Church, 2550 Bohicket Road at 11:00 am. Interment, Churchyard. The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in J. HENRY STUHR INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 232 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC. Gertrude was born February 19, 1927 in Charleston, South Carolina, daughter of Ephraim Mikell Seabrook and Gertrude Vincent Seabrook. She was a member of the Johns Island Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Hay taught third and fourth grade Sunday School and was a member of the church choir. She was a graduate of Moultrie High School and The Roper Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. Gertrude worked in the newborn nursery at Roper Hospital until she married. Mrs. Hay worked as a teacher's aide for the Charleston County School District in 1971 and became a nurse for the county schools on James Island from 1972 until her retirement in 1987. She loved her job and cared deeply for the children. She will be deeply missed by her three children; son, William C. Hay, Jr. and his wife, Gail of Summerville, SC, two daughters, Trudy H. Reeder and her husband, James of Johns Island, SC and Patty H. Holder and her husband, Kirk of Lexington, SC; five grandchildren; Melanie Hay, Griffin and Kate Reeder, Anne and Robert Holder; sister in law, Mary Seabrook of Mt. Pleasant, SC and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brother Ephraim Mikell Seabrook, Jr.. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the following caregivers from Ann's Angels who took care of Mom which allowed her to stay in her home as long as possible; Henrietta Barnette, Maria Bligen, Audrey Brown, Lou Edna Frazier, Tameka Harley, Beverly Hunter, Gloria McDaniel, Ann Robinson, Regina Roper, Dorothy Scott and Dawn Singleton. Sincere thanks also go out to the nurses and staff at National HealthCare Corporation of Charleston and to the doctors, nurses and staff at downtown Roper St. Francis for the excellent care they gave our mother. We would be remiss if we did not also thank the members of the Johns Island Presbyterian Church who served our Mom communion at her home and visited her faithfully. You mean so much to our family.
