Gerald "Jerry" Bernard Fechter

Gerald "Jerry" Bernard Fechter, 90, of Folly Beach, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, March 1, 2023. His funeral service will be held graveside Friday, March 3, 2023 in Emanu-El Cemetery "Maryville", Sycamore Avenue at 10:00 a.m.  Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

Jerry was born April 8, 1932 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Aaron Fechter and Sadie Baumrind Fechter.  He was a graduate of Georgia Tech where he was an honor student in electrical engineering and then served in the U.S. Army. Jerry was most proud of his submarine missile electronic work. He was candid and forthright, giving a voice to the voiceless while protecting the seagulls and the loggerhead turtles. Everyone at Folly Beach new him as the seagull guy.

Jerry is survived by hundreds of barking Gull-friends (who he fed at least twice a day for many years); untold numbers of loggerhead turtles; nephews and nieces: Dr. Cary Fechter, Alan Fechter, David Fechter (Karen), Michael Fechter (Tia), Aaron Fechter (Kerry Green), Saul and Sadie Dingfelder and Ethan Leggett; and nieces: Adrienne Fechter (Tom Hicks), Nancy Kedem (Ben), Harriet Romano (and her son Nathan), Janis Kirtz (Harold) Toodie Murray (Robert), Essie Fechter, Ann Fechter Fleming (Ron), Megan Fleming Walker and Dr. Karen Fechter Leggett; super-great nephews and nieces: Abigail, Nathan, Michelle, Jeremy, Alice, Adam, Benjamin, Maris, Noah, Carson, Rachel, Max, Gabrielle, Thia; his girlfriend, Wanda Vine and her granddaughter Katrina; and his best friend, Norman Lubesky. He is also survived by his favorite four-legged friends: Blacky, Jeremiah, Sadie and Blondie among his myriad of dogs. He was predeceased by his brothers: Robert, Melvin and Hyman Fechter.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Loggerhead Marinelife Center, 14200 US Highway 1, Juno Beach, FL 33408.
