George A. Smith, 89, of North Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Eleanor Jo Gleaton Smith died Tuesday, September 18, 2012. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, September 21, 2012, in St. John's Catholic Church, North Charleston, at 11:00 am. Prayers of Final Commendation and Farewell will be held at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday from 10:00 am until the time of service in St. John's Catholic Church. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL.George was born February 11, 1923, in Charleston, South Carolina, a son of Cleveland Henrick Smith and Margaret Cosgrove Smith. He was a retired Ship Surveyor at the Supervisor of Ship Building and Repair, USN, Charleston, SC. He was retired from the Naval Reserve and a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a graduate of Murray Vocational High School and the Naval Shipyard Apprentice School. George was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and a former Lector and Usher. He was an honorary lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the National Association of Federal Employees. He enjoyed swimming, jogging, bowling, softball, animals and the outdoors.He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Eleanor G. Smith of North Charleston, SC; daughter, Cheryl S. Isaac and her husband Joe of Pawleys Island, SC; son, Bradford A. Smith of North Charleston, SC; a grandson, Anthony M. Isaac of Myrtle Beach, SC; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by three sisters, Gertrude S. Couturier, Celestine S. Lawton and Dorothy S. Ritter; two brothers, Cleveland H. Smith and T. Joseph Smith; two grandchildren, Joseph T. Isaac, III, and Kristy R. Smith. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John's Catholic Church, 3921 St. Johns Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29405.
