G. Fred Rast, 89, of Charleston, SC, entered into Heaven on Thursday, August 29, 2013. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, August 31, 2013, at Grace United Methodist Church at 1:00 pm. Interment, with military honors, at Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway.
Fred was born July 5, 1924 in Swansea, SC, son of the late George Fred Rast, and the late Carrie Yon Rast. He was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church since 1971 and Cherokee Place United Methodist Church from 1950 to 1971. He served as a delegate to the Annual Conference for a total of 16 years from both churches. He was an Air Force Veteran of World War II, serving 3 1/2 years in England with the Eighty-Eighth Air Force and was a member that Historical Society. He was the retired Senior Vice President of Associated Industrial Supply Companies with headquarters in Columbia, SC. He was also Executive Vice President and General Manager of Charleston Supply Company and Southern Mill Supply Company of Charleston, SC. He loved to volunteer at Roper Hospital, beginning in 1992 up until his passing. He was a Master Gardener Emeritus with Clemson Extention Service. He was a Charter member of the North Charleston Sertoma Club, a former member of North Charleston Rotary Club and danced with three local Square Dance Clubs.
He is survived by his five daughters: Elinor R. Fritz of Gainsville, FL, Lynn R. Dorris of Charleston, SC, Sharon R. Maroney of Charleston, SC, Suzanne R. Graham (Mac) of Summerville, SC and Sharon R. Malpass (Shelton) of Wilmington, NC; eight grandchildren: Drew, Carrie, Mary, Adam, Grayson, Sloan, Nick and Cheyenne; and a sister, Dorothy Epps of Lake City, SC. He was predeceased by his loving wife of sixty years, Elinor (Jackie) Rast; his brothers: William Yon Rast, Edward Lewis Rast and Frances Anne, and John Thomas Rast and Mary Emma. Also sisters: Carolyn Rast Mack and Joe Ben, and Lula Pearl Carrington.
