Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

Abb was a resident of Bishop Gadsden Episcopal Community, James Island, SC. He was born November 1, 1919, the son of the late George Abbott Middleton and Elizabeth Robertson Whaley Middleton. He attended Craft School, Porter Military Academy, The Episcopal High School, Alexandria, VA, The Citadel and graduated from Naval Flight School as an ensign pilot in July 1942 and was immediately assigned to an anti-submarine squadron operating from San Juan, Puerto Rico. From there his squadron followed the German submarine activities to Trinidad, British Columbia, Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland, Bermuda, England and the Azores. His part in actions involving German ships, Submarines and fighter planes earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Air Medals.

After World War II he returned to Charleston and operated a successful advertising business until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the Carolina Yacht Club, Ancient Artillery Society of Charleston, Society of Colonial Wars and the Agricultural Society of South Carolina of which he was President for four years.

Abb's happiest days were those spent outdoors with his childhood/lifelong friends hunting, fishing, and camping in the sand dunes of the then undeveloped islands around Charleston including Wild Dunes, Kiawah, and Bulls Island. Sailing the creeks and coasts all around Charleston Harbor, and "hanging out on the rails" of the Battery with the local boys, his life was one of close friendships and idyllic freedom.

Abb was married to Sallie Ellington of Asheville, NC from whom he was divorced in 1968. He married again in 1972 to Joan McDonald. He is survived by Joan, his two daughters from his first marriage, Sallie M. Parker and Mikell M. Howington, four grandchildren: Kenneth Kaltreider, Christian Kaltreider, Sallie Namey and Forbes Turley and eight great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Agricultural Society of South Carolina, 75 South Battery, Charleston, SC 29401 or Bishop Gadsden Episcopal Community, One Bishop Gadsden Way, Charleston, SC 29412.
