Entered into eternal rest, on January 20, 2021, George Franklin Mathews, HMC, USN, retired. George was born November 12, 1936 in Douglas, GA to Charles Alfred Mathews and Annie Mae Hursey Mathews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother: Grady, sisters: Charlene, Ann, and Delouise.
George loved and served his country for 42 years. He was on active duty in the Navy for 22 years, serving in country during the Cuban Crisis and in country in Vietnam with the Fleet Marines. Upon retirement from active duty, he served 20 more years as the supervisor of SPD at the Charleston Naval Hospital. His life was devoted to the cause of CHRIST, serving in various ministries in many churches across the country. His family was his pride and joy.
Surviving are his wife, Glenda of 63 years who was the love of his life; a son, Derek Vance Mathews (Brenda), granddaughter, Gabriella Marie Mathews, and grandson Derek Aiden Mathews, all of North Richland Hills, TX; daughter, Monica DeLeah Mathews Keen (Michael), granddaughters Madison Aleah-Anne Keen and Maryn Ansley Keen all of Summerville; sister in law, Wanda Mathews of Tifton, GA, nieces and nephews.
Grave side services will be at 3 pm, Sunday, January 24, 2021, in Carolina Memorial Gardens. Due to COVID-19, the family respectfully requests that facemasks be worn and social distancing practiced.
In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to the Summerville Hospice House, 374 Myers Road, Summerville, SC 29486.
