George B. Donnell, Sr., 95, of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Harriett Smith Donnell passed away at his home on March 21, 2013. His funeral service will be held Monday, March 25, 2013 in St. John's Lutheran Church, 5 Clifford Street, at 11:00 a.m. Entombment, Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
Mr. Donnell was born May 11, 1917 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late William E. Donnell and Angie McLemore Donnell. He was the owner of Donnell's Bicycle Store on King Street. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service and The Citadel Post Office. He was a member of the Fellowship Society, a Life Member of The Charleston Elks Lodge #242, BPOE and a Mason. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.Mr. Donnell was a baseball coach for Dixie Youth, Palmetto Boys and the Little Boys League for many years. This was one of the most rewarding and enjoyable times of his life. He was a gentle and caring man who loved his family dearly.
He is survived by a son, George B. Donnell, Jr.; daughter, Anita D. Mitchum and her husband William; grandson, Scott L. Mitchum and his wife Cristie; two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Brooke Mitchum all of Charleston, SC. He was predeceased by two brothers, one sister and a daughter-in-law.The family would like to thank Mr. George's caregivers, Albertha Wittrell, Gretta Addison, Rose Lewis, Irene Gethers, Kathryn Oliver and Rachel Washington for their kindness and excellent care.
