George Henry Allen, Jr, 88, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Carolyn Baker Allen went home to heaven on Wednesday, May 14, 2014. His Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, May 18, 2014 in the J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road. Entombment will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral chapel on Saturday, May 17, 2014, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
George was born August 7, 1925 in Leland, Mississippi, son of the late George Henry Allen, Sr. and Priscilla McManus Baker Allen. He retired as Superintendent of Terminals with CSX Railroad after 41 years of service. George was a 33rd Degree Mason and life member of Etiwan Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and Omar Shrine. He was a faithful member of the Isle of Palms Baptist Church. George was also a member of the Civil Air Patrol. He was an avid woodworker, gardener, and electronics buff. George loved the lowcountry and was an avid boater and fisherman and was eager to volunteer his time with the Charles Pinckney House and the Charleston County Election Commission.
He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Carolyn Baker Allen; his daughters, Brenda Cooley of Mount Pleasant, SC and Charlene Stephenson and her husband, David of Birmingham, AL; his grandchildren, Michelle Cooley, Elizabeth Cooley, and Julia Howell Johnson and her husband, Dan; and his great-grandchildren, Andres Posada, Kimberly Duc, Alexander Johnson, and Nathaniel Johnson. He was preceded in death by his son, Ricky Lee Howell; his brother, Henry Allen, Sr.; his sisters, Voila Sawyer and Iva Johnson; and his beloved pet, Brandy of 17 years.
Memorials may be made in George's name to Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
