George Peter Alexander

George Peter Alexander, Ph.D., 89, husband of Helen S. Alexander of Mt. Pleasant, SC, passed away on Tuesday, November 9, 2010. The relatives and friends of George Alexander are invited to attend his Funeral Service on Monday, November 15, 2010 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC.  MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL at 10:00 a.m. Prayers of Final Commendation and Farewell will follow at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens.  Dr. Alexander worked at the Defense Language Institute, also known as The Presidio, as well as the Naval Postgraduate School, both located in Monterey, CA.  Author of a 13-volume series of language manuals, Dr. Alexander's works became the definitive standard by which the Presidio operated for many years.  He received his Master's degree from Johns Hopkins University in linguistics, and his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in Germanic languages and literature.  He was Professor Emeritus of German at Wheeling Jesuit University.  In addition to German, Professor Alexander taught Latin and French.  An amateur poet, he produced a volume of poetry in German.  Through most of his retirement, Dr. Alexander resided in Cottonwood, AZ before moving to Mt. Pleasant, SC where he was a member of Christ Our King Catholic Church. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Helen S. Alexander, his only daughter, Terry Kent, his granddaughters, Sarah E. Kent and Kathy Kent, his grandson, William A. Kent and wife, Irene Constantine, and great granddaughter, Ana Theresa  Kent. The family requests memorials be made to Christ Our King Catholic Church Senior Ministry, 1149 Russell Drive, Mt. Pleasant, SC  29464.
