Geneva George Kahrs, 101, of Charleston, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Sunday, January 4, 2015. Her Funeral Service will be held Thursday, January 8, 2015 in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street, at 2:00 p.m. Interment, private. The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Geneva was born January 1, 1914 in Aiken, South Carolina, daughter of Leonard Wilbur George and Edith Irene George. She moved to Charleston in the 1930's and married Warren W. Kahrs (deceased). Geneva began working for the Charleston Police Department in the late 1940's when it was on St. Phillip's Street as one of the first school crossing guards. As the department grew, she became one of the first meter maids, later moving indoors as a clerk in the traffic office. She retired from the police department after 30 years.
After retirement, Geneva led an active life. She earned a black-belt in karate and also went parasailing in her 70's. She became active in swimming and joined the Charleston Masters Swimming Group. She competed in the Senior Olympics where she held many national records for her age group into her 80's. Geneva also enjoyed gardening and reading.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her son, George W. Kahrs (Jeanine) of Byhalia, MS; daughter, Betty Kahrs Wieters (Walter) of Woodbridge, VA; 2 grandsons, W. Brian Wieters (Jenni) of Murrells Inlet, SC and Kevin M. Wieters (Melynda) of Haymarket, VA; 4 great-grandchildren, Davin, Dawson, Elizabeth, and Jaden; and her sister, Betty George Hurlbutt of Walterboro, SC.
