Gene Elliott Wilder

Gene Marshall Wilder, 85, died Wednesday, December 19, 2018 in Ashley River Plantation assisted living facility in Charleston, SC. Her memorial service will be held Sunday, December 23, 2018 in the First Presbyterian Church in Clinton at 2:00 p.m. followed by a reception at the church. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel.

A native of Rock Hill and a long-time resident of Clinton, Genie died after a 12-year battle with Alzheimer's. She was a daughter of the late Arnold Friedheim Marshall and Harriet Moore Marshall of Rock Hill. She and her husband, Donny Wilder, had been married for 64 years. Other survivors include a son, Robert P. Wilder II of Isle of Palms; granddaughters: Mrs. Skylar "Shay" Monroe of John's Island and Gene "Elliott" Wilder of Mount Pleasant; great-grandson, Marshall Monroe; and great-granddaughter, Sophie Monroe of John's Island; sisters: Mrs. Martin "Sister" Goode and Mrs. Hugh "Betsy" Rock both of Rock Hill, SC and Sophie Marshall of Charlotte, N.C.; and brother, Steve Marshall of Rock Hill, SC.

Genie was a graduate of Winthrop Training School in Rock Hill and was a member of the class of 1956 at Converse College. In 1996 at the class' 40th reunion she was awarded the Career Achievement Award for her accomplishments in art and public service. She won numerous national, regional and state awards for the quality of her watercolors and oil paintings. Genie was a charter member of the S.C. Watercolor Society and was a member of the National Watercolor Association, Midwest Watercolor Association and others. She was a docent in the S.C. Governor's mansion during the administration of Gov. Richard Riley. Genie was also a 6-year member of the S.C. Arts Commission. One of her paintings, "Tea Time", was accepted into the State Museum collection. It was used as the cover painting of a S.C. ETV cookbook and prints were awarded to donors to the ETV fund drive. Genie served on the Board of Visitors at both Presbyterian College and Thornwell Home For Children and was a member of the Design and Campaign Committee for the P.C. Visual Arts Building.
