Gene Gil Simpo (USN, Ret.)

Gene Gil Simpo, 93, of Charleston, SC passed away Tuesday evening, July 7, 2020 two days before his 94th birthday. He was born July 9, 1926, in Cebu, Philippines, the son of the late Quay Sim Poo of Xiamen, China and the late Felicidad Gil.
He studied to be a CPA, later joining the US Army followed by the US Navy. He proudly served the US Army in World War II, the Cold, Korean and Vietnam Wars. From 1969-1971, he was stationed at NATO, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) near Mons, Belgium. His last duty assignment & major command was on the USS L. Mendel Rivers. He received Sixth Good Conduct award (1975); Vietnam Service Medal (2nd, 3rd & 4th Bronze Star); Vietnam Campaign Medal w/clasp; commendations including Rear Admiral LeBourgeois letter of Appreciation (1972) and Chief, Navy Section, CREAD BR, OPS DIV SHAPE (1971) w/enclosures and ACOS OPS SHAPE Certificate of Appreciation (1969-1974). When he retired from the military, he worked at Lockheed Missiles & Space. His work aptly focused on the Trident missile, a submarine launched ballistic missile.
Upon retirement he dabbled in everything from real estate, gardening, ballroom dancing, cooking to travel. He was a dedicated parishioner of Saint Joseph Catholic Church, never missing the eight o'clock Mass every Sunday for decades. He enjoyed telling stories of his incredible life adventures including in his hometown, California, Spain, Belgium, oceans and ports worldwide. He is the epitome of the American Dream through the pursuit of excellence and dedication to his work. He was passionate about nature, recycling and helping others, including volunteer tax preparation.
Gene is preceded in death by his beloved wife Concepcion Simpo and daughter Elizabeth Wilson. He will be missed by many, and is survived by his children, Robert Simpo and Diane Lambrinos; four grandchildren: Bryan Wilson, Christina Wilson, Rey Simpo and Sebastian Lambrinos. He is also survived by one sibling, nieces and nephews.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, September 21, 2020 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1695 Raoul Wallenberg Blvd, Charleston, SC 29407. Interment with military honors will be held at 12:00 pm on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary St, Beaufort, SC 29902.
