Dr. Gene Elizabeth Burges entered into eternal rest on the morning of May 5, 2012. Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral services in St. John's Lutheran Church, Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at 11a.m. Burial churchyard.
Dr. Burges was born January 11, 1947, in Charleston, SC, the daughter of Julius Eugene Burges and Margaret Tiencken Burges. She graduated from Ashley Hall and received her BA from Vanderbilt in 1968. She was awarded her MD and PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1983 and completed an internship in Internal Medicine and a residency in Dermatology, also at MUSC. She established her private practice in Dermatology in 1988 and remained at MUSC as a clinical attending physician. In 2005, she joined MUSC full-time as Associate Professor of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery and of Microbiology and Immunology and became Chief of Dermatology at the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Administration Hospital. She truly loved her profession, both as a clinician and as a teacher. In 2009 she was awarded the Golden Apple Award by medical students in recognition of excellence in teaching, and in 2011 she received the MUSC Foundation Teaching Excellence Award in the educator/lecturer category.
Dr. Burges was a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Dermatology, the South Carolina Dermatological Association, the Charleston County Medical Society, the American Medical Association, and Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
She was a life-long member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where she served on the vestry and was a member of the choir.
She is survived by two sons, Stephen Sandford Estes, Jr., and his wife Carol Spector of San Francisco, CA, and Philip Burges Estes and his wife Natalie of Charleston, SC; two granddaughters, Zinnia Spector Estes of San Francisco and Lila Sinclair Estes of Charleston; two sisters, Anne Burges Lake and Judith Charlotte Burges of Charleston; and a sister-in-law, Mary Eleanor Estes of Tampa, FL. Her family was the source of her greatest joy.
