Gail Vaughan Vandall

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC – Gail Vaughan Vandall, age 82, died on March 31st from complications following a recent illness. Gail was born July 12, 1941, in Steubenville, Ohio to the late George Richard Vaughan and Dorothy Daley Vaughan. Gail grew up in Canton, Ohio and studied English at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Allan Lee Vandall, two brothers, Jim and Dick Vaughan and her sister Margaret Vaughan Maurer. Gail is survived by her daughter Alison Vandall Barker, son Allan Vaughan Vandall, her three grandchildren – Alexa Vaughan Barker, Grayson Vaughan Vandall and Katherine Elizabeth Vandall and her sister-in-law Patti Vaughan. Her grandchildren cherish memories of cooking with their “Gommy”, spending time running errands with her and “Papa” throughout Charleston and taking cruise vacations.

Gail and her late husband Allan Lee Vandall were one of the first purchasers of a villa on Kiawah Island when the resort opened in the mid-seventies. They visited the island several times a year and moved to Kiawah in 1997 when Allan retired after selling his manufacturing company in Michigan. Gail started a new career as a property manager when she moved to the Charleston area. In 2005, she purchased Beachwalker Rentals, one of the largest vacation rental companies on Kiawah & Seabrook Islands with her daughter Alison Vandall Barker. Gail retired in 2018 when Beachwalker was sold to Vacasa and she moved from Kiawah to Mount Pleasant to live closer to her children and grandchildren.

Gail enjoyed all aspects of the low country. She loved to take long walks on the beautiful Kiawah beach and collect sand dollars, take visiting friends on tours in historical downtown Charleston where her children now own Tommy Condon’s and have Chardonnay lunches in Mount Pleasant. Gail loved animals and always had pets throughout her life. She had two dogs and two cats who were with her constantly. Her all-time favorites were her cats Patches, Tigger and Charleston. She also had several “grand” dogs and cats whom she loved. She will always be remembered with a smile on her face, her positive attitude and as a loyal friend who would do anything for others.

According to her wishes she will be cremated and a celebration of her life with family and friends will be held this summer. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Gail's memory may be made to Pet Helpers, 1447 Folly Road, Charleston, SC 29412. Pet Helpers’ serves communities across the Lowcountry with a mission is to end the euthanasia of all adoptable cats and dogs by keeping all animals until adopted.
