George Harris Thaxton, of Charleston, SC, beloved husband of Ginny Driver Thaxton, died peacefully on Monday, September 3, 2012 at his residence.
Harris was born in McMinnville, Tennessee, son of the late Thomas Benjamin Thaxton and Emma Frances Comer Thaxton. He was a chemical engineer with a BS degree from Auburn University and a graduate degree from the University of Florida. Early on, Mr. Thaxton was a scholar and inventor, having two patents while working with Monsanto Corporation. He went on to achieve great success in the field of business. He founded and built several companies, including Port City Bonded Warehouse Company, and was an astute commercial real estate investor, with ventures ranging from a pepper farm in Costa Rica to a trucking terminal in Tennessee. A very private man, Mr. Thaxton, quietly, was as generous a benefactor to others, as he was frugal to himself. He was also very giving of his time, with numerous organizations and their boards benefiting from his wisdom and keen intellect over the years. He was a member of the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul and was especially devoted to mission work in Central and South America.
He is survived by his son, Mikell Christopher Thaxton; daughter-in-law, Dorothy G. Thaxton; and cherished grandson Witham "Wit" Mikell Thaxton; stepdaughter Leigh Ann Alpert Stoneburner (Scott); Stepson, Christopher Clay Alpert; all of Charleston, SC; a brother, Thomas B. Thaxton, Jr. (Dianna) of McMinnville, TN; sisters, Juliette T. McBride (James) of Manchester, TN, and Emma Lena "Ena" T. Ferguson (Larry) of St. Augustine, FL; sister-in-law Rose D. Stuart (Hardwick) of Prosperity, SC and mother-in-law, Frances C. Driver of Sumter, SC.

A private family memorial service will be held in McMinnville, Tennessee.
