The relatives and friends of Captain and Mrs. Frederick Sherrill Poulnot are invited to attend the funeral services of the former in St. John's Lutheran Church, Friday, May 6, 2011 at 2:00 pm. Interment, Churchyard. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, Thursday between 5:00 and 7:00 pm.
Captain Poulnot was born August 2, 1922 in Charleston, SC, the son of Dr. Frederick Schwettmann Poulnot and Ora Sherrill Poulnot. He attended The Citadel and left to enlist in the Navy in the fall of 1942. He served three years in the Navy which included combat in the Pacific. After the war, Captain Poulnot attended the College of Charleston. Then he began his apprenticeship with the Charleston Branch Pilot's Association from which he retired after serving 42 years. He was an Honorary Life Member of the American Pilots Association, Life Member of The Arion Society, a member of the Charleston Yacht Club and The Carolina Yacht Club.
Captain Poulnot's associates elected him President and Manager of the Charleston Branch Pilots' Association for a total of 15 years, and as the Association's Secretary Treasurer for one year. For an additional eight years, he was also elected a Director of the Association. He served 15 years as a Commissioner of Pilotage for the Port of Charleston. The American Pilots' Association (APA) benefited well from Captain Poulnot's leadership. He represented South Carolina in that Association for a total of 17 years. He was a Y-Flyer International Champion in 1965. He loved sailing, hunting and fishing.
Captain Poulnot has also been very active in local community affairs in the City of Charleston. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Charleston Trident Chamber of Commerce; Board of Directors of the United Community Services of Charleston; three terms on the Board of Vestry and Wardens of St. John's Lutheran Church. He served as President of the Maritime Association of the Port of Charleston and the Charleston Sertoma Club; Secretary and Treasurer of the Propeller Club of the Port of Charleston and also a member of its Board of Governors.
He is survived by his wife of Charleston, SC; two sons: Frederick Sherrill Poulnot, Jr. of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Peter McLeod Poulnot of McClellanville, SC; one daughter: Claudia Poulnot de Mayo (Richard) of Atlanta, GA; two sisters: Marjory Poulnot MacLean of Winter Park, FL and Ora Poulnot McMillan of Beaufort, SC; 8 grandchildren: Pauline Bridgham Poulnot, Marjorie Charlotte Poulnot, Anne McLeod Poulnot, Virginia Anne de Mayo, Sarah Hope de Mayo, Marjorie McLeod de Mayo, Peter McLeod Poulnot, Jr. and Legare Walpole Poulnot. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Poulnot Neff.
