Frederick William Daniels III, 82, formerly of Charleston passed away on March 19, 2018 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, SC. He was born in Oakville, CT to Frederick William Daniels Jr. and Beatrice Windebank Daniels. He was predeceased by sisters Dorothy Quist and Helen Landry, and by his son Mark Dixon Daniels, all whom he loved very much.
After graduating from Sacred Heart High School in CT, Fred attended The University of the South in Sewanee, TN where he was honored to serve as President of Sigma Nu Fraternity for two years. Upon graduating from Sewanee, he pursued a career in teaching and administration at The University of the South, followed by the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, NJ and Duke University in NC. In 1967 he was hired as Director of Admissions at The College of Charleston. During his tenure he served various positions, including Head Basketball Coach, Vice President, and Interim President. Fred loved the College very much. He was most proud of his role in helping to integrate The College during the presidency of Dr. Theodore Stern.
He is survived by his daughter Kim Hay and her husband Lewis and by his son Pete and his wife Melissa. He is also survived by granddaughters Eliza Hay, Olivia and Sarah Daniels, and Kali Daniels.
Fred was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Watertown CT, attended St. Michaels's Episcopal in Charleston, and had most recently attended Trinity Church in Myrtle Beach, SC.
The family would like to thank the staff at Myrtle Beach Manor for the loving care that they provided in his last year of life. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association in Fred's memory.
His Memorial Service will be held Friday, March 23, 2018 in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street at 11 am. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
