YNCM Fred Lee Young, USN (Ret.), 84, of Isle of Palms, South Carolina, husband of Grace Willamin Goodman Young died peacefully at his home on Friday, April 17, 2015. His Funeral Service will be held, Tuesday, April 21, 2015 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens with full military honors. The family will receive friends in the Mount Pleasant Chapel on Monday, April 20, 2015 from 5:00 until 7:00 pm.

Fred was born October 20, 1930 in Birmingham, Alabama, son of the late Calvin Cole Young and the late Sybil Horn Young. He was raised in Birmingham, Alabama and attended Ramsey High School in Birmingham. He enlisted in the United States Navy on October 20, 1947 and retired on August 25, 1975 with 28 years service as a Master Chief Petty Officer (Submarine Service) (E-9). Major duty stations included Naval Air Technical Training Unit, Olathe, Kansas; U.S. Naval Submarine Base, New London, CT; USS SIRAGO (SS485) and USS SPIKEFISH (SS404); U.S. Navy Recruiting Station, Birmingham, AL; Staff, Commander Submarine Squadron FOR; Staff, Commander Submarine Flotilla/Group SIX; and Staff, Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Retiring while serving on the Staff, Commander Submarine Group SIX in Charleston, SC. For the last four years of Active Duty, served on the Staff of Commander Submarine Group SIX as the Administrative Assistant and the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Commander and was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for meritorious service. After retirement he attended the College of Charleston, then going to work for the South Carolina Employment Security Commission. Fred Joined the South Carolina Employment Security Commission in 1976 as an Employment Interviewer. Shortly thereafter was assigned to the Veterans Section as a Local Veterans Employment Representative (LVER) and as a Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) in the placement of veterans. Promoted to Supervisor of the Veterans Placement Section in July 1986. He Attended the National Veterans Training Institute, Class No. 2, Denver, Colorado, in January 1988 and then retired from the South Carolina Employment Security on January 1, 1994. Fred and his wife, Grace "Penny", have resided on the Isle of Palms, South Carolina since March 1967. They celebrated their Golden Anniversary on May 20, 2002 in Charleston with their Daughter, Tanyia Dawn (Young) Lewis and their beloved granddaughter, Victoria Grace Lewis. Fred was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 50, The American Legion Post 179, SC State Employees Association, International Association of Workforce Personnel, Etiwan Lodge No. 95, Scottish Rite, Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 17, and Veterans of Foreign wars, Post 15042.

Fred is survived by his wife of over 63 years, Grace W. "Penny" Young of Isle of Palms, SC; two sons, Fred Lee Young, II and his wife, Denise, their daughter, Rebecca, son, Brian, and their families of Franklin, TN and Byron A. Young of Kansas; one daughter, Sandra Michele Long-McLean and her husband, Richard, of Candler, NC; three brothers, Calvin C. Young of Newport News, VA, Jerry R. Young of Ft. Worth, TX, and Joe E. Young of Savannah, GA. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tanyia Dawn Lewis, sister, Noranne Young Warren and brother, Thomas Young.
