Fred Amick Thomas, Jr., 86, of Charleston died peacefully on July 2, 2019. He was born on March 15, 1933 in Ramseur, North Carolina to Fred A. and Elinor Riehm Thomas. After attending Gardner Webb University, where he played football, he served for eight years in the United States Coast Guard. During a year at Guilford College, friends introduced him to Virginia Cox of High Point, who was teaching school in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Fred and Virginia married on December 16, 1961 and in 1962 moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where Fred was branch manager for E.F. Craven Co. for more than 20 years. In 1983, Fred and Virginia moved to Charleston where Fred worked as a manager for Prime Equipment Co. until his retirement in 1995. Over the years, Fred's professional and community service included terms as Vice President of Associated Equipment Dealers and president of several homeowners' associations. He was a member of Harbor View Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Virginia C. Thomas of Charleston, a daughter, Elinor T. Boone (Randy) of Charleston, a granddaughter, Aubrey P. Glendinning (Dustin) of Chicago, a brother, Robert E. Thomas (Martha) of Ramseur, North Carolina, and a niece, Amy Petty (Glenn) of Warrenton, Virginia.
A service of remembrance and thanksgiving will be held in the Chapel at Bishop Gadsden at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, followed by a reception.
