The family will receive friends at the chapel Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Fred was born March 5, 1926 in McRaeville, Georgia, son of the late Robert Mitchell Laing and Cora Gray Laing. He attended Mercer College and the University of Georgia. He served 2 1/2 years in the U.S. Navy and was a World War II veteran. He worked in the Life Insurance and Mortgage Loan business with Jefferson Standard, Durham Life & Independent Life Insurance Company. He was in the Mortgage Broker business for over 50 years. He was also the property manager for Charlestowne Office Park.

Fred was a former member of the following: West Ashley Sertoma where he was a charter member, Hibernian Society, Elks Lodge, Jaycees, Charleston Life Underwriters Association, Country Club of Charleston, Porter Gaud Association, and the Charleston Licensed SC Real Estate Broker Association.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Barbara Burbage Laing. He always said his wife, Barbara, would have many a jewel in her crown. She was at his side providing strength and support every step of the way. That part of the vow that says "in sickness and health" has a new meaning now.

Fred is also survived by two sons, Robert Thomas "Tom" Laing of Columbia, SC, and John Mitchell Laing of St. Simon, GA.

He is also survived by his brother, Harry L. Laing (Daphne) of Greensboro, NC; sister-in-law, Betty B. Martin (Grady) and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bernard and Gloria Dyal.

There were four special people in his lives that he loved very much and he considered as his grandchildren: Brian Burbage, Charles Burbage (Liz), Chris Burbage, and Crystal Burbage; great-grandchild, Charlotte Burbage. You meant so much to PaPa and he loved you all so very much.

Fred also loved all of his nieces, nephews and cousins. A special thank you to T.L. Lacey and Betty Ann Lacey (niece) for always being there and helping out throughout his life. He loved both of you very much and appreciated everything you did for him and Aunt Bobbie.

He would like to thank his sister-in-laws and brother-in-law, Betty Martin, Bernard and Gloria Dyal for the countless hours of love and support during his many trips in and out of the hospital.

He was preceded in death by his beautiful, loving granddaughter, Elizabeth Gower Laing, whom he loved and adored with all his heart.

He was also preceded in death by his brothers: James R. Laing (Mae), and Hubert A. Laing (Jeanette); and his brother-in-law, Grady H. Martin; and nephews: Newton "Dinky" Baker and Ricky Allen Baker.

He will be remembered by his family and friends for his quick wit, easy smile and his gentle loving heart.

Memorials may be made to Pinecrest Baptist Church, 1285 Ashley Hall Road, Charleston, SC 29414.
