Dr. Frank Adelbert "Sonny" Hoshall, Jr., 85, beloved husband of Ann Renken Hoshall, passed away on April 2, 2026, in Greenville, South Carolina. He was born on August 1, 1940, in Charleston, South Carolina, to the late Dr. Frank and Mercedes Erixon Hoshall.
Frank and Ann's love story began in childhood; the two were neighbors and lifelong companions, having met in second grade. Their bond deepened after sharing a special photo in the dance archway during their senior year of high school, marking the beginning of a beautiful journey together for over 64 years.
Following high school, Frank graduated from Clemson University. He then attained his doctorate from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Frank proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War as a flight surgeon after receiving a special invitation that was sent to him in the mail to serve his nation. His dedication to serving others was evident throughout his career in the medical field as a radiologist.
After retiring from his medical career, Frank and Ann (and their cats) enjoyed traveling on their motor home throughout the United States and Canada.
Frank liked to share favorite quotes for family and friends affectionately known as Sonny-isms. We will cherish the memories of those quotes. A few favorites are:
"It is better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it."
"You can never have too much fuel unless you are on fire. Then one drop is too much."
"I have reached satiety. Any excess would prove to be superfluous."
Frank is survived by his devoted wife, Ann R. Hoshall of Greenville, South Carolina; two sons, Hank Hoshall (Kathy) of Mount Holly, North Carolina and Thad Hoshall (Jessica) of Melbourne, Florida; a daughter, Elizabeth Mullins (Joe) of Greenville, South Carolina; and a sister, Esther Beaumont of Burke, Virginia. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Jack Zemp (Katie), Annie Zemp, Brent Hoshall, Jay Hoshall and John Hoshall; and one great-granddaughter, Allison Grace Zemp.
A graveside service will be held Sunday, May 24, 2026 in Bethany Cemetery at 1:00 pm.
