Frank Jervey Ball

Frank J. "Cappy" Ball Frank Jervey Ball, PhD, 94, of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Mary Elizabeth Furtwangler, died Saturday, August 17, 2013.

His funeral service will be held Monday, August 19, 2013, in St. Philip's Church, 142 Church Street, at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be private at Strawberry Chapel Yard in Berkeley County. The family will receive friends, Sunday, August 18th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 232 Calhoun Street, Charleston.

Born January 29, 1919, in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late John Coming Ball and the late Annie Arden Jervey, he was named after his Uncle, Captain Frank Jervey and was often known by the nickname "Cappy."

He attended St. Andrew's School in Middletown, Delaware. He went to college at The University of the South (Sewanee) where he played football, was president of ATO, led the Order of the Gownsmen and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He received his PhD in Chemistry at University of Rochester in 1941. Dr. Ball was director of research for Westvaco in Charleston and Associate Corporate Research Director until 1984. For seven years he was President of ESPRA, international pulp and paper research organization. As director of Charleston Research, Dr. Ball has made significant contributions in the recovery and utilization of by-product chemicals from wood. These efforts resulted in the award of forty-nine U.S. and foreign patents.

He was a member of the American Chemical Society, The Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industry, South Carolina Society, Carolina Yacht Club, the Albermarle Supper Club, the Society for the Preservation of Spirituals, and a founding member of the Piping and Marching Society of Lower Chalmers Street. He was also Chairman of the Charleston Chamber of Commerce Higher Education Committee 1969-74.

He was a member of St. Philip's Church, Charleston.

He is survived by four sons: Dr. Frank Jervey Ball Jr. and his wife, Rose, of West End, NC; Dr. Stuart Furtwangler Ball and his wife, Mary Anne, of Mobile, AL; Dr. Bruce Devon Ball and his wife, Mitzi, of Charleston, SC; and Mr. Steven Moultrie Ball and his wife, Margaret, of Charlottesville, VA.

Grandchildren: Frank Jervey Ball, III, Lisa Marie Ball, Alan Watson Ball, Stuart Ross Ball, Catherine Coley Ball, Anne Arden Ball, Mary Elizabeth Moultrie Ball, Laurens Elizabeth Ball, Bruce Devon Ball, Christopher Reynolds Moultrie Ball, Alexis Moultrie Ball, Gordon Moultrie Ball, and Charlotte Wilson Ball.

Also by his brothers, Rev. Canon John Coming Ball, Jr. of Charleston, SC and Edward Robbins Ball and his wife, Joan, of Charleston, SC, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sisters: Arden Ball Howard and Theodora Ball Condon; and his brother Thomas Morris Ball.
