Francis Cordes Porcher

Francis Cordes Porcher entered eternal rest on Saturday November 5, 2022.
Francis was born on October 31, 1936, in Mt Pleasant at the family home, Stratton Place, to Philip and Wilhelmina Porcher.  In his early childhood and during World War II he moved from military base to military base with his father Captain Philip Porcher. When the war was over, the family returned to Stratton Place, where he enjoyed playing in the creek, marshes and wandering the woods.   Francis graduated from Moultrie High School and would graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  After graduation, he served in the US Navy achieving the rank of Lieutenant.  Upon leaving active service he entered the naval reserves.  He married Julia Robertson and celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Francis was an independent insurance agent and received his CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter) certification.  After living in St Petersburg, FL, and Decatur GA he found his way back to the Lowcountry.  They established a home in the Old Village and were there for 30 years.  Francis retired from Pinckney Carter Insurance Company.  He enjoyed his retirement in a home he and Julia built at Stratton Place for many years which gave him easy access to Porcher Creek where he was raised.  He enjoyed golf with friends and colleagues and was a member of Snee Farm Country Club. Even on vacation his clubs were with him.  He fulfilled a dream when he played the Master’s Course in Augusta, GA.  When not playing golf, he would be pulling for his alma mater in basketball and football (Go Heels!) or his favorite player in golf. He could also be found in the Lowcountry creeks shrimping, fishing or oystering when wind, tide and weather permitted.

He was involved in his community serving in many capacities.   Francis was an active member of his episcopal churches in Florida, Georgia, Saint Andrews Episcopal Church Mount Pleasant and Christ Episcopal Church Mount Pleasant.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, Francis leaves behind his beloved wife Julia and their three sons and their wives: Cordes (Sophie), Charles (Debbie) and William (Tracey) and five grandchildren - Weldon, Stuart, Claire, Wilson, Zachary.  He is survived by his siblings, Daisy Stoudenmire, Philip Porcher (Georgia Ann) and John Porcher (Fran) and brother-in-law Edward Robertson (Susie).  He was pre-deceased by his brother Koga Porcher (Phyllis).
