Francis Allen Crawford, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2024, in Charleston, South Carolina, at the age of 86. Born on July 8, 1938, in Charleston, Allen was a beloved figure and the surviving Patriarch of the Crawford family, cherished for his warmth and nurturing spirit.
Allen was a product of Charleston's own Maple Street, where he spent much of his formative years. His commitment to education was exemplified by his graduation from Rivers High School in 1956 and further studies at The Citadel and Presbyterian College. He honorably served in the United States Army, showcasing his dedication to his country.
Throughout his life, Allen enjoyed a distinguished career, excelling in various professions. He made significant contributions as a counselor with the Substance Abuse Commission, where his empathetic nature and guiding wisdom touched countless lives.
Allen is survived by his beloved wife Janice Crawford who provided tenderness, warmth and unwavering support throughout their marriage of 54 years. He is a cherished stepfather to M. A. Al-Ahari and his wife Indira, and an adoring step-grandfather to Sean Rudder, Jonathan Rudder, and Kaylee Rudder. From a previous marriage, he lovingly recalls his daughters, Melissa Crawford and Kathryn Crawford Wheat. Allen is also survived by his sister, Patricia Crawford Combs, and a host of nieces, including Julie Combs Katinas and Mary Kathryn Combs, Jennifer Crawford Roberson, and his with sister-in-law Jane Crawford. His legacy continues through his nephews, Jacob Alexander Crawford and Joshua Seth Crawford, as well as many great nieces and nephews who will carry his memory forward.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Alexander Crawford and Kathryn Eidson Crawford, his stepson Mark Rudder, and his brother Jack Eidson Crawford. Each of these relationships shaped Allen’s life in profound ways, and he carried their memories with him as a source of strength.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Allen’s life. A memorial service is planned for Sunday, November 3, 2024 at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel,1494 Mathis Ferry Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464, at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends an hour before the service.
Francis Allen Crawford leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and community service that will be remembered by all whose lives he touched. He will be dearly missed, but his spirit will forever be celebrated in the hearts of his family and friends.
