Francis Gendron Cain

Francis Gendron Cain, Jr., widower of Mabel Stewart MacKellar Cain, died Monday, July 29, 2013 in Charleston, SC. His funeral service will be held at the graveside in St. Philip's Churchyard, Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends Friday in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.

Born February 25, 1923 in Charleston, SC, the son of Dr, Francis Gendron Cain, Sr. and Parham Atkins Cain. In addition to his wife and parents, Frank was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. James Ravenel Cain and two nieces, Eleanor Cain Stutler and Louise Cain McGee.

Frank attended public schools in Charleston and The Citadel. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army in North Africa and Italy. Following the war, he returned to The Citadel and later attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering. As a civilian employee of the Navy, he taught digital computer theory to naval and civilian personnel and later became superintendent of the Fleet Ballistic Module Maintenance Facility in Charleston. He trained both U.S. and British personnel here and in the U.K. and was involved in the establishment of the British Polaris and Poseidon Missile Facility in Scotland.

He was a member of the South Carolina Society, the Society of Colonial Wars, The Saint John's Hunting Club, the Huguenot Society, and was a lifelong member of St. Philip's Church.

Frank is survived by his brother, Dr. William H. Cain and his wife Julia Bethea Cain of Charleston, SC; sister-in-law, Doris M. Gressett of Purcellville, VA. Surviving also are nieces and nephews, Parham M. Cain of Knoxville, TN, Susalee Cain Spruill of Nashville, TN, Claudia Cain Kitchen of Columbia, SC, Pauline Cain Stoney of Charleston, SC, Caroline Cain Jumper of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Alexandra S. Gressett of Purcellville, VA, Dr. James Ravenel Cain, III of Sumter, SC, Francis G. Cain, III of Charleston, SC, Dr. Steven Gressett of Unity, ME and John A. Dunn, of Charleston, SC.

In lieu of flowers memorials be made to The Charleston Animal Society, 2455 Remount Road, North Charleston, SC 29406 or to the charity of one's choice.
