Listen to Obituary
Frances Hannah Sokol Halio, 84, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of Elliott Halio entered into eternal rest Monday, January 9, 2017. Her funeral service will be held Thursday, January 12, 2017 at the graveside in Emanu-El Cemetery (Maryville), Sycamore Avenue at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

Frances was born March 8, 1932 in Charleston, the daughter of Rose and Joseph Sokol. She grew up in Charleston and graduated from Memminger High School and the College of Charleston. She met her husband, Elliott, while he was a Marine stationed at Parris Island. They married on September 12, 1954 and were married for over 61 years until Elliott's death in 2016. After they married, Frances and Elliott moved to Durham where Elliott attended law school at Duke. Frances worked in Durham and supported her husband through some very tough times. After law school, they moved to Charleston, where they lived for the rest of their lives. Frances was a teacher at Moultrie before retiring to raise her family. Her family came first, and she was there to support them in whatever they did. Later, as the family matured, she spent much of her time doing volunteer work with organizations such as Hadassah and the National Council of Jewish Women. She was a long-time member of Synagogue Emanuel. She enjoyed playing golf at Snee Farm Country Club and playing bridge with her good friends. She wrote a book entitled History of the Sokol Family. However, her main focus in life was always her family, and they will sorely miss her.

Frances is survived by her children, Andy and Sally Halio, of Charleston, by her sister, Evelyn Needle, of Charleston, by her brother, Allen Sokol, of Chicago, and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Synagogue Emanu-El, 5 Windsor Drive, Charleston, SC 29407.
