Florence Louise Davis Medlin

November 25, 1920 — March 8, 2012

Florence Louise Medlin died Thursday, March 8, at Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC. She was 91. A private memorial service was held Sunday in Wilmington, NC, where she was born.

Mrs. Medlin moved to Charleston in 1947, as a young bride. She was married to the late Erwin M. Medlin of Hughes Motors Co. Surviving are their two children, Greta Medlin, who worked as a reporter with the Greensboro, NC, News & Record and now lives in Charleston, and Alan Medlin, a professor at the University of South Carolina School of Law in Columbia, and a daughter-in-law, Florence Medlin, a psychotherapist.

Mrs. Medlin was a homemaker who fiercely loved all children, especially her own, and often came to the aid of troubled youth. She was a dedicated environmentalist. She also loved the ocean, gardening, watching political commentary on television, creating outsider art from scrap materials, playing tennis and board games, and listening to music, particularly Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby Darren, and Elvis. In the late 1950's, she dragged her pre-teen daughter to a downtown theater to stand in a three-block line for the opening of "Love Me Tender".

Her cooking skills were legendary. Specialties included mini-meatloaf, single- layer Duncan Hines cake, peek-a-boo lemon meringue pie with homemade crust, and Chef Boyardee Pizza in a box.

She was cute, witty, playful, and unencumbered by convention. For many years she drove without a license and occasionally wrote Letters to the Editor using false names. She was once called down in print for causing a disturbance at a Spoleto chamber music concert—arriving mid-performance, climbing over laps, enthusiastically passing around a noisy container of TicTacs.

She was a great Mama, and leaves behind no dull moments and many lively stories to be told for years to come. Her children want to thank everyone who filled her last years with comfort and joy. She will be hugely missed.

Mrs. Medlin requests that any memorials be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, or any other organization that helps children.
