Florence Hirsch Cotten, 84, of Charleston, South Carolina, died on June 28, 2013, at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. Her Memorial Service will be held at Holy Spirit Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3075 Bees Ferry Road, on July 20, 2013, at 3:00 pm. Inurnment; Bethany Cemetery. The family will recieve friends Friday, July 19th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at J. HENRY STUHR INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 232 Calhoun Street, Charleston SC.
Florence was born December 23, 1928, to George Harris Hirsch and Mabel Schmetzer Hirsch. She graduated from Memminger High School and Rice Business College. Florence earned her B.A. in English from the College of Charleston where she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. She married, and later divorced, Marion deVeaux Cotten, Jr. Florence worked for First National Bank of South Carolina for 28 years, followed by seven years at William Means Real Estate. Christened at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, on Wentworth Street, Florence was a lifelong and active member of the church, which later merged with Holy Comforter Lutheran Church to become Holy Spirit Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was Church Council Secretary, History and Records Committee member, and office volunteer at St. Andrew's for many years.
She is survived by her sister, Louise Engle (Harold Engle) of Washington, D.C.; her daughter, Sarah Lynn Cotten (Edward Rowland) of Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren, Noel Cotten-Rowland (Laura Fox), Erin Cotten-Rowland, and Laura Cotten-Rowland, all of Washington, D.C.
